Putting something back

Emphasising the historic link with the rail industry, Scientifics provided some much needed “hi-vis” jackets to the volunteers working on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, which runs from Wirksworth in the foothills of the Peak District.  The last passenger train ran in 1947 and the last freight in 1989, but the railway is not dead.  For the last six years enthusiasts have been working to reopen the line as a “heritage railway”.  Her Majesty’s Railway Inspectorate quite rightly insists that all the volunteer work is done to the same safety standards as the “big” railway; which means that all staff working on or about the track must wear High Visibility clothing.  Workers now progress towards Duffield confident that they will be seen by the drivers of the fifty year old locomotives which are used to operate the works trains.

In a similar vein, but with a different emphasis, Scientifics’ brand name will now be seen in the Middle East.  Through the charity “Glasgow the Caring City”, we are sending our old PPE to Afghanistan to help after the ravages of war. Since it’s beginning in the south side of Glasgow, the charity has raised £50M to help good causes both at home and abroad. The founder of the charity is the Rev Neil Galbraith a larger than life character who was recently voted Great Scot of 2006.  Our clothing will be going to Afghanistan along with 1,000 kites for the children. Kite flying was a national pastime in Afghanistan until the Taliban banned it, hopefully this will help the locals get back to some form of normality.

At Christmas, the money normally spent on greetings cards went to charity – we nominated Heads Up as our Christmas charity, which finances Head and Neck Cancer Research,  and we raised nearly £1,500.  Throughout the business various other fund raising work has been happening and to date we have raised nearly £12,000 for Heads Up - but we will give you more details about this and some of the other iniatives in our next newsletter.

The company supports a variety of organisations; some have a bigger profile than others such as the annual Derby Masters relay race.  However, all of them have one thing in common – putting something back into the community that we work with.
